war blog #2
I am now towards the middle of the book and it started to get pretty good and upsetting. Saidu was one of the boys that ishmeal met on his journey alone. He walked in to six people, Musa, Alhaji, Kanei, Jumah, Moriba, and Saidu. They became extremely close on their journey. The author adds some pretty good foreshadowing of what was going to happen to Saidu and it came up pretty fast. After eating the meat from a dead crow the boys think they are going to receive bad luck. You can conclude that they think it is Friday the 13th. It gets really dark outside to the point that they can not even see there own hands. They have to hold each other as they walk so that they do not get lost. They come up towards a bridge and hear whispers walking towards them they all get scared thinking that it is the rebels. They find the closest bush to hide in until they walk by. They figures walk by them and for some reason they can not understand what they are saying. After they walk by everyone regroups by calling each other names everyone answers but Saidu. Saidu is found sitting in a bush not saying a word at all. He is just sitting there in complete silence. When they finally get him to talk again he says they were not people... They have just saw ghosts. Saidu says something that really made ishmeal think. Every time that they come close to death a piece of Saidu dies. He explains soon he will be nothing but a walking body. It seems that the author is trying to give you a heads up that Saidu might not have much time left. When they finally reach the village and nightfall approaches them they find a place outside of someones house to sleep. During the night dogs start to bark and everyone tries to wake up before they are noticed by the homeowner. Everyone wakes, but Saidu the homeowner explains that he knew that they were out there. He tried to do everything he could to wake up Saidu, but they conclusion has came that he had left them. If makes me think about how much longer the rest of the characters in the story have left. They are all scared and have to be losing hope. I wonder how many of the friends Saidu's explanation about a part of him dies every time that he looks death in the eyes effected the rest of the them.

This was another great write up on the book. I agree with what you said about the author foreshadowing on Saidu's death. Do you think the boys actually saw ghosts though.
